After watching the documentary ‘Cowspiracy’ on Netflix, it really opened my eyes to the behind the scenes of the animal agricultural industry. It makes you realise how much advertising sways us away from the core truth, because within food advertisements, the food is taken and so far removed from the animal itself, that we don’t see the advertisement showing the cruelty, blood and pain that it took. Instead you see an image of the juicy delicious looking burger or fried chicken. We don’t see the pain a pig goes through from being beaten, baby chickens being put down chutes for your chicken nuggets, baby cows being taken away from the mother from birth, a cows udders that appear so horribly raw and so on. After having pet pigs, I refuse to have pork, because imagine eating your own dog or cat?
Poverty and hunger prevail in the world, where many people starve to death and are not getting enough food to eat. More than a billion people in the world live in poverty. We throw away a lot of vegetable, fruit and meat every year, because we are over producing the amount of food that we can physically eat. However, there are 1/3 of the earth’s ice free land that are occupied with livestock and livestock feed to feed the animals, and as a result for us to consume. It doesn’t seem very ethical. I really hope from the bottom of my heart that if you are reading this, that you will at least consider eating less meat. Eating less meat is not only a great message to send to people and the industry that you don’t want to consume and support their actions, but it’s also beneficial for ones health.
As I watched the video called Best Speech You Will Ever Hear, Yourofsky says imagine a child being inside a cage with an apple and a rabbit. Is it likely that the child will eat the rabbit, and play with the apple? That really struck a cord, because of course not. No child is born with the instinct to catch and eat an animal. When I was taking care of kittens this week, they naturally have the instinct to play with the toy mouse, bite, chew, chase and squeeze it because they are carnivores and are born with the trait of hunting other creatures. If you want to become vegetarian, I really recommend cutting out dairy milk and having alternatives like vegan cheese. I don’t drink dairy milk, because it initially started from feeling congested and getting a runny nose after having it.
I’ve tried all these kinds of milk, but also wanted to mention hazelnut milk. I had it last week for the first time and it was so delicious and rich! Coconut milk is so great with a matcha latte, almond milk is great for smoothies and soy milk is great in your cereal. It’s natural to be hesitant and perhaps resist taking action to consume less animal products, but I think the best thing is to research and have an understanding of what is going on in the meat and dairy industry. We live in a consumer society and there are so much meat that is disposed of. These are animals that are born and then scheduled to die, and many won’t even be consumed. Eating meat is something we are taught, but I feel that if we grew up being taught the process of the animal to the meat on our plate, it’s very likely we’d consume it less.
When we are born we drink our own mothers milk, and so why would we drink a cows milk as an adult? I’ve always wondered about that, because it doesn’t seem natural to be drinking someone else’s milk. A calf is taken away from their mother as early as 1 day, so that the mother can give milk for us humans to consume. Imagine if you were taken away from your mother the first day and placed in a confined area? A mother cow needs to be pregnant in order to give milk, and this means many cows are raped in order to produce milk for us. From an article here it says: If you drink milk, you’re subsidizing the veal industry. While female calves are slaughtered or kept alive to produce milk, male calves are often taken away from their mothers when they are as young as 1 day old to be chained in tiny stalls for three to 18 weeks and raised for veal.
I do hope after reading this article you might consider substituting dairy milk for some delicious almond, coconut or soy milk!
