The Serenity Prayer

d6bba8f46bf1aa0f107c87aa62b5cd13 God grant me the serenity
To accept the things I cannot change;
Courage to change the things I can;
And wisdom to know the difference.

My daily goal is to simply change what I can, leave what I can’t and be content. It is extremely easy to be trapped into a cycle of using too much time on wasted thoughts and actions, when they won’t change the situation. I have done this for years, where I try to change something, but nothing seems to happen. The thing is, a lot of people pray expecting everything to come true. However, prayer does work (whether you believe in Christ – you could use meditation as an example), but one also needs to take action where they can and have the confidence to know when to leave certain situations to God. In our lives we will realise that even when there is a door closed in front of us, there is always another window open. Having faith is really powerful, and will really make your life more fulfilling.

The things we can learn from it –

Change is constant. As individuals we are always changing through out the ages and phases of life. It is important to have courage to change what you can, before you let others change you or let negativity dictate your life. Change comes with improvement, movement and growth. It is inevitable and moves day by day. Whether our views change, our body changes or our personalities – it is important to remind ourselves that we are in total control of our change. Our choices are our own at the end of the day. Whether we are a kind person or a mean person, it comes with our own decision of what to say to others.

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Going through hard times can either consume you or strengthen you. We often hear two kinds of people. One who looks back in the past and lives there for all time. And the other one, who grows, learns and takes the experience to make them a better person. They use it to motivate them and to plant it as a seed to grow stronger. I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason, and no matter what period you are struggling through, it is important to have a reminder, that this is a life lesson to take to make you a mature and wiser person.

Peace of mind, brings peace in life. Have you ever lied on  your bed, with the voice in your mind suddenly seemingly more alive than ever. A person that analyses and is more sensitive, it is important to separate what is constructive criticism and what is truly hurtful. Most of the time, people will say certain things out of love –  it’s important to know the difference. We live in a society full of noise. We live in a time where many people speak certain things without carefully thinking whether it will affect the other person. Everything is instant today with technology, and therefore it is even more important to have moments to have time to yourself and have peace and quiet. Living a simple and peaceful life, is something to be cherished. Life is too short to have too much clutter.

Happiness is in the present. When you were younger, do you remember the times you may of fell on the concrete path and scrape your knees? Or any triggering memory that made you cry non-stop. Then ten minutes later you were running around laughing again, forgetting you hurt yourself. Many people often make many, many goals in a hope to lead to happiness. Whether that is losing weight, earning more money, getting the job, moving oversea and so forth. However, happiness is much more than that. Much more deep, yet simple than that. It is in our every day. Just as we can control what we can change, we can make a conscious decision to be happy, no matter what in any situation – believe it or not. It was asked to elderly people, what they want to do most before they die. Words of family and friends spring to mind – think about that. At the end of the day, it’s the people we love in our lives that matter the most.

THE SERENITY PRAYER

God grant me the serenity
To accept the things I cannot change;
Courage to change the things I can;
And wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
As it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
If I surrender to His Will;
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life
And supremely happy with Him
Forever and ever in the next.
Amen.
